If you are searching for a bachelor's in data science or cyber security, you are probably weighing a few years of study against something faster. A degree and a short course are not rivals. A bachelor's degree, which takes about four years in Nepal for most IT programmes, gives you broad theory, a recognised qualification and time to grow. A short practical course, like our 12-week Data Science and Machine Learning or Cybersecurity and Ethical Hacking courses, gives you hands-on practice with the tools used at work, in months. Which one fits depends on where you are now and what you need next.
What each one gives you
| Bachelor's degree | Short practical course | |
|---|---|---|
| Time | About 4 years for most IT degrees | Weeks to a few months (ours are 12 weeks for these two subjects) |
| Focus | Broad theory: maths, programming, networks, databases and more | One area, practised with the tools people use at work |
| Qualification | A degree, which some employers and most visa and further study routes ask for | A course certificate and the projects you built |
| Best for | School leavers with time, and anyone who needs the degree for a job, visa or master's | Students who want practice alongside a degree, graduates who want a specific skill, and career changers |
When a degree is the better choice
If you have just finished +2 and have the time, a degree is worth a lot. It teaches the theory under the tools, such as how networks really work or why a statistical method gives the answer it does. That theory lasts longer than any one tool. Some jobs, government roles and many routes to studying or working abroad also ask for a bachelor's degree by name. A short course does not replace that.
When a short course is the better choice
A short course fits when you need practical skill soon. That might be because you are already studying and your classes are mostly theory, because you graduated in another field and want to move into data or security, or because you want to try a field before committing years to it. In our data science course you clean real data in Python, write SQL, build Power BI dashboards and try starter machine learning. In the cyber security course you work through penetration testing with Kali Linux, Nmap, Burp Suite, Metasploit and SQLMap, the way testers do on the job.
Doing both
Often the best answer is both at once. A course in the morning or evening, alongside a degree, turns theory you are reading about into something you have practised. By the end of your degree you have the qualification and a set of projects to show. Our batches run at several times of day, and there are online seats for students outside Kathmandu.
Graduates can do the same in reverse: a degree in another subject plus a focused course is one way into tech.
Questions to ask yourself
- Do I need a degree certificate for the job, visa or further study I have in mind? If yes, the degree comes first.
- Do I already have a degree, or am I studying one? If yes, a short course adds practice the degree may not give.
- Am I sure about this field? If not, a few months of practice is a cheaper way to find out than four years.
