Start digital marketing from home, with the Canva, Meta Ads, WordPress and Analytics logos

You can start digital marketing from home with a laptop, a steady internet connection, a Gmail account and free tools. Begin by learning how customers find a business, then practise on something real, such as a family shop's Facebook page or a small website of your own. Keep notes of what you did and what changed. Those notes become a small portfolio you can show later.

This guide covers the practical side of starting at home. For the full order of skills, read how to learn digital marketing step by step.

What you need

  • A laptop. A phone is fine for posting, but you need a laptop for Google Analytics, website work and ads managers. 4GB of RAM works, 8GB is more comfortable.
  • Stable internet. Enough for video calls and uploading short videos.
  • A Gmail account. It opens Google Analytics, Search Console, Google Ads and Google Business Profile.
  • A Facebook account. You need it to manage pages and Meta Business Suite.
  • Something real to work on. A family business, a friend's shop or a topic you can build a page around.

You do not need a marketing degree, a paid tool or a big budget to begin.

Your first four weeks at home

Week 1: Learn the basics

Learn the marketing funnel, the steps a person takes from first hearing about a business to buying. Learn three numbers: click-through rate (how many clicked out of everyone who saw), conversion rate (how many did what you wanted) and cost per lead (what each enquiry cost). Google's free Skillshop courses on Google Analytics are a useful start.

Week 2: Pick your practice project

Choose one business or topic. Write down who the customers are, what they want, and what stops them from buying. If it is a family shop, ask a few regular customers why they come.

Week 3: Set up the free tools

Set up a Google Business Profile if the business serves people locally. Set up Meta Business Suite to manage the Facebook and Instagram pages. If there is a website, connect Google Search Console and Google Analytics.

Week 4: Start posting and measuring

Post on one platform, three times a week. Use Canva or Canva AI for images and ChatGPT or Claude for first drafts, then rewrite them in your own words. At the end of the week, check which posts got messages or comments, not only likes.

Practising on a family business page

A family or local business is the most useful practice you can get. You see real customers, real questions and real results. Here are things you can do without spending money:

  • Fill in every part of the Google Business Profile: category, hours, photos and a short description.
  • Ask happy customers to leave a Google review, and reply to every review.
  • Write clear answers to the questions customers ask most, and pin them on the page.
  • Post a short video each week showing the product or the people behind it.
  • Track how many messages or calls come in each week, in a simple Google Sheet.

Agree with the owner on one goal before you start, such as more WhatsApp messages. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what helped.

Building your own small website

A small website teaches SEO in a way social media cannot. Pick a topic you know, such as trekking routes, local recipes or study tips. WordPress is a common choice and needs no coding. A domain and hosting cost a little, so this step can wait until you are sure.

Write a few helpful articles, each answering one question people search. Connect Search Console and watch which searches start to show your pages. Our guide on learning SEO with free tools lists the tools in order.

Trying a small ad later

Paid ads come last. Try them only when you can measure results and when the owner agrees to a small test budget. Ads charge in dollars, so you will need a dollar card or someone who can pay for them. If you are unsure which platform to start with, read Meta ads or Google ads for a small business in Nepal.

Building a small portfolio

Your portfolio does not need to be big. Two or three honest case studies are enough to start. For each one, write:

  1. The business and its goal.
  2. What you did, step by step.
  3. The numbers before and after, even small ones.
  4. What did not work, and what you would try next.

Put these case studies on your own website or a LinkedIn post. Include screenshots of real results, with the owner's permission. Small, real numbers with a clear story are more convincing than big claims.

How much time to give it

A regular hour or two a day works better than a whole weekend once a month. Marketing skills build through small repeated tasks: post, check, adjust. If you study or work during the day, pick a fixed time each evening. Keep a short weekly note of what you tried, so you can see your own progress over a month.

Common mistakes when learning alone

  • Watching tutorials for weeks without practising on anything real.
  • Posting on five platforms at once and doing none of them well.
  • Spending on ads before tracking is set up.
  • Using AI text without checking facts or adding real details.

If you want a mentor without leaving home

Learning alone works, but it is slow without feedback. Our Digital Marketing with AI course runs for 8 weeks and has live online seats, so you can join the class from home anywhere in Nepal. Every class is also recorded. Read how live online classes work before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I learn digital marketing at home with only a phone?

You can start posting and learning on a phone. For analytics, websites and ads managers, a laptop makes the work much easier.

Do I need money to start digital marketing from home?

Not at first. Social media, Google Business Profile, Search Console and Google Analytics are free. A website and ads cost money, so leave them until later.

What if my family does not have a business?

Ask a friend, a neighbour's shop or a local cafe. You can also build a page or small website on a topic you know and grow it from zero.

Can I join a digital marketing class online from outside Kathmandu?

Yes. Our batches have live online seats, and every class is recorded, so you can follow from anywhere in Nepal.
